On Sunday, August 28, 2022, at 1:48 a.m., Officers with the Colorado Springs Police Department, Falcon Division, were dispatched to the area of I-25 and Woodman Rd to investigate a multiple vehicle traffic crash on I-25. Upon arrival, officers discovered that a single vehicle was traveling south in the north bound lanes. The vehicle that was traveling the wrong way, a Cadillac Escalade, crashed into two other vehicles traveling north in the northbound lanes of I-25. Those two vehicles were a silver Hyundai SUV, and a red Ford SUV.
When officers arrived, they discovered that the driver of the Escalade was deceased on scene. There was a single driver in the red Ford SUV. There was a driver and two additional occupants in the silver Hyundai. All four people from the other vehicles were transported to local hospitals by AMR for treatment of minor injuries. Due to the nature of the crash the Major Crash Team was notified and responded to assume the investigation.
On Tuesday August 30, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased driver. The deceased driver has been identified as 41-year-old Kaulana Watson of Lafayette, Colorado. This is the 32nd traffic fatality this year. At this same time last year Colorado Springs had 35 fatal traffic crashes.
