On Wednesday, March 30, 2022, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Violent Crimes Homicide/Assault Unit initiated a homicide investigation. On Tuesday, April 5, 2022, detectives obtained an arrested warrant for murder in the first degree for 38-year-old Deka Simmons of Colorado Springs. On Thursday, April 7, 2022, Deka Simmons was arrested by the CSPD Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force (VOFTF) and the Tactical Enforcement Unit (TEU). During the course of the investigation, the victim has been identified as 48-year-old Daxcimo Ceja of Colorado Springs.
Mr. Ceja’s death is being investigated as the 17th homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2022. The CSPD investigated five homicides at this time last year. This continues to be an active and open investigation. A photograph of Deka Simmons is not releasable at this time; further details including the suspect’s photograph will be released in the future as appropriate.
