On Sunday, March 22, 2021, at about 2120 hours, the Colorado Springs Police Department received a call of shots fired in the 2500 block of East Buena Ventura Street. Upon arrival, officers contacted two reporting parties, a male and female, who advised that the female’s estranged boyfriend intentionally contacted her, violating a restraining order issued due to a history of Domestic Violence. During the contact, the estranged boyfriend began assaulting the male reporting party, who was armed with a handgun. While being attacked, the male reporting party fired several shots at the estranged boyfriend, who then fled on foot; the male reporting party was unaware if the estranged boyfriend was injured due to the shooting. Responding officers initiated a case report for a restraining order violation as well as stalking. The officers did not come in contact with the estranged boyfriend at this time.
On March 23, 2021, at approximately 0629 hours, the Police Department received a call for service from a neighbor in the same hundred block of East Buena Ventura Street, reporting a man was lying face down in the snow and did not appear to be breathing. Officers responded and located a deceased male who was subsequently identified as the estranged boyfriend from the previously mentioned call for service.
Violent Crimes detectives responded and assumed responsibility for the ongoing death investigation. It is believed the estranged boyfriend arrived in a Blue Honda-style vehicle, possibly bearing Colorado license plate OZJ-820, with another unknown male who left the scene in that vehicle after the altercation. The unidentified male and the Blue vehicle have not been located.
While the El Paso County Coroner’s Office will make the official cause and manner of death determination, this death is being investigated as a homicide. No arrests have been made at this time.
