On July 22, 2020, at approximately 12:35 P.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department’s (CSPD) Communication Center received an “Urgent Assist” call for service in the 500 block of Custer Avenue. CSPD officers and medical personnel were dispatched to a residence where it was reported two people were injured inside of them home, and one may be deceased.
When medical personnel arrived on scene, they confirmed the death of an adult male. The injured adult female on scene was transported to a hospital where she was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries. Based on the preliminary investigation by patrol officers, detectives from CSPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
On July 24, 2020, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the deceased victim. The male was identified as 83-year-old Gilbert Sandoval of Colorado Springs. While the Coroner’s Office will make the official cause and manner of death determination, this death is being investigated as a homicide and continues to be an active investigation.
Mr. Sandoval’s death is the 22nd homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2020. The CSPD investigated 14 homicides at this time last year. Follow Twitter for updates, as appropriate.
