Second Update

On June 14, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the deceased victim, who has been identified as 17-year-old Riley Whitelaw of Colorado Springs. While the Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death, Ms. Riley’s death is being investigated as a homicide.

At the time of the incident, Ms. Riley’s death was the 24th homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2022. The CSPD investigated 18 homicides this time last year.

First Update

During the active follow-up investigation, Mr. Joshua Johnson, a 28-year-old male, was identified as the suspect. Mr. Johnson was contacted by Troopers with the Colorado State Patrol on Interstate-25 near Walsenburg. Mr. Johnson was arrested without incident and is being charged with one count of Murder in the First Degree. A photo of Mr. Johnson will be released when it becomes available.

On Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 6:55 pm, officers from the Colorado Springs Police Department responded to the 6800 block of Centennial Boulevard for a deceased individual. Detectives from the Homicide / Assault Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
