Original

On Wednesday, March 24, 2021, at approximately 9:02 A.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a crash at the intersection of Las Vegas Street and South Tejon Street involving a pedestrian and a tractor trailer. When officers arrived on scene, they located a deceased adult male. The intersection was shut down in all directions and the Major Crash Team responded to assume responsibility for this investigation.

The investigation revealed that the tractor trailer was traveling eastbound on Las Vegas Street, attempting to make a right-hand turn southbound on South Tejon Street on a green light. As the tractor trailer made their turn, a male pedestrian heading eastbound on Las Vegas Street attempted to cross South Tejon Street and walked into the trailer. As a result, the pedestrian fell down under the trailer and was subsequently run over. At the time, the pedestrian crosswalk light indicated pedestrian traffic was not allowed to cross. The tractor trailer was not speeding and the right turn signal was operating properly.  There is no impairment in regard to the driver and the driver cooperated fully with the investigation.

This is the 6th traffic related fatality in Colorado Springs this year and the 4th pedestrian to be killed in 2021.  At this time last year, there were five traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.  The investigation into this incident is continuing.

All lanes of traffic were re-opened at approximately 12:40 PM.
