On Monday, August 22, 2022, at 8:53 PM, members of the Colorado Springs Police Department, Sand Creek Division, were dispatched to the intersection of E Platte Ave and N Murray Blvd to investigate a van versus motorcycle traffic crash.  The investigation revealed that the motorcycle was traveling east on Platte Ave and the van was traveling west on Platte making a southbound turn onto Murray Blvd.   As the van began to make the left-hand turn the front of the van collided with the motorcycle causing the motorcycle driver to be ejected from the motorcycle.  Members of AMR and the Colorado Springs Fire Department responded to the scene and provided medical care to the motorcycle rider.  The Motorcycle rider was transported from the scene to a local hospital with serious life-threatening injuries.

Due to the nature of the crash, The Major Crash Team was contacted and responded to the scene to assume the investigation.

On Thursday, September 15, 2022, the motorcycle rider succumbed to his injuries and passed away at a local hospital.  On Friday, September 16, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office conducted an autopsy of the deceased motorcycle rider.  The motorcycle rider has been identified as 19-year-old Kristoff Martinez-Olvera of Colorado Springs.  This is the 40th fatal traffic crash this year with 17 of these crashes involving motorcycles.  At this same time last year, there were 37 fatal traffic crashes.

This is an on-going investigation, but initial information indicates the motorcycle’s speed appears to be a contributing factor in the crash. No arrests have been made.
