Update

Detectives from the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Homicide/Assault Unit have been continuing the shooting investigation that resulted in the death of 19-year-old, Colorado Springs resident Alijah Vialpando which occurred in November of 2019. On May 5, 2021, detectives applied for and obtained an arrest warrant for a third suspect for Murder in the first degree. The male suspect was arrested on May 11, 2021, by the Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force and booked into the El Paso County Jail where he remains in custody.

We are unable to release the name of the suspect until the District Attorney’s Office makes a charging decision, as the suspect is an adult, but was a juvenile at the time the crime occurred.

The homicide investigation of Mr. Vialpando is still an active investigation and further details will be released in the future as appropriate.

On July 8, 2020, detectives applied for and obtained an arrest warrant for a second suspect, 21-year-old Gage Kohler of Colorado Springs for Murder in the first degree. Kohler was served the arrest warrant on the same day while he was in custody at the El Paso County Jail for charges that are unrelated to this investigation. The homicide investigation of Mr. Vialpando is still an active investigation and further details will be released in the future as appropriate.

Update

On November 5, 2019, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a shooting that resulted in the death of 19-year-old, Colorado Springs resident Alijah Vialpando. Since that time, detectives from CSPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit conducted several interviews and executed nearly a dozen warrants in regards to this homicide investigation which led to the identification of a suspect. Detectives applied for and obtained an arrest warrant for 19-year-old Kellen Fortune on June 12, 2020 for Murder in the first degree. Homicide detectives referred the apprehension efforts of Fortune to CSPD’s Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force comprised of members from CSPD, the El Paso County Sheriff’s Office and the United Stated Marshals Service (USMS). Through the task force’s efforts, they were able to determine that Fortune was located in the area of Billings, Montana and the apprehension was referred to USMS deputies for that region.

On June 18, 2020, the United States Marshals Montana Violent Offender Task Force located Fortune and he was killed after an exchange of gunfire with members of the task force. There were no reported injuries to the USMS deputies. The Billings Police Department (BPD) Investigations Division was called to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No BPD officers were involved during the incident. 

CSPD does not have any further details regarding the shooting involving Fortune that occurred in Montana.  Please direct any questions you may have to the Billings Police Department. The homicide investigation of Mr. Vialpando is still an active investigation and further details will be released in the future as appropriate.

UPDATE

On Monday, November 5, 2019, officers responded to a reported shooting in the 2600 block of Briargate Boulevard and contacted an injured adult male victim who was transported to a local hospital. That person has since succumbed to his injuries. The El Paso County Coroner’s Office has completed an autopsy of the victim and the death has been ruled a homicide. The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Alijah Vialpando of Colorado Springs. Mr. Vialpando’s death is the 23rd homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2019. At this time last year, the city had 31 homicides.  This is still an active and ongoing investigation.

ORIGINAL RELEASE

On Monday, November 5, 2019, at approximately 7:05 P.M. the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) responded to a report of a shooting in the 2600 block of Briargate Boulevard.  Upon their arrival, officers located an adult male victim with apparent injuries inside a vehicle crashed in a parking lot in the 2700 block of Briargate Boulevard.

Initial investigation revealed that the adult male was in a parking lot in the 2600 block of Briargate Boulevard when shots were fired. The adult male drove in a vehicle northbound across Briargate Boulevard, travelling over the curb and coming to rest in a parking lot in the 2700 block of Briargate Boulevard.  Medical personnel responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital with life threatening injuries.

Detectives with CSPD’s Homicide/Assault Unit responded to the scene and assumed responsibility for the investigation.  Members of the Major Crash Team also responded to assist with the investigation.
