On Tuesday, November 24, 2020, at approximately 9:23 P.M., the Colorado Springs Police Department was notified of a single vehicle traffic crash on southbound Interstate 25 at the Garden of the Gods exit. Responding officers found the driver, who was the lone occupant of a Dodge pick-up truck, suffering from serious injuries. After being treated on scene by the Colorado Springs Fire Department and AMR, the driver was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of those injuries. Due to the severity of the injuries, the Major Crash Team responded to the scene to assume the investigation.
It was revealed the driver of the Dodge pick-up truck was traveling southbound on Interstate 25 when he lost control of his vehicle and struck the concrete lane divider twice before coming to a rest in the southbound lanes of traffic. The driver, identified as 69-year-old Robert Trenholm of Colorado Springs, was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
On November 25, 2020, Mr. Trenholm died as a result of the injuries he suffered in the crash. He is the 46th traffic fatality in Colorado Springs in 2020. At this time last year, there were 41 traffic fatalities.
It has not yet been determined if excessive speed or impairment are factors in this crash. The investigation into this incident is continuing.
