On June 3, 2020, at approximately 6:54 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a crash at the intersection of Briargate Parkway and Explorer Drive. Mr. David Hundley of Colorado Springs died as a result of this crash.

An investigation into this crash conducted by the CSPD’s Major Crash Team revealed that Mr. Hundley was attempting to turn left from westbound Briargate Parkway onto southbound Explorer Drive when he was struck by an eastbound vehicle being driven by 20-year-old Eric Sartuche-Dean of Colorado Springs. The investigation revealed Mr. Sartuche-Dean was driving at a very high rate of speed when the crash occurred. Mr. Sartuche-Dean was not injured in this crash.

Based on these investigative findings, on August 6, 2020, Mr. Sartuche-Dean was arrested for Vehicular Homicide and booked into the El Paso County Jail on this charge.

On Wednesday, June 3, 2020, at approximately 6:54 AM, the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) was notified of a crash at the intersection of Briargate Parkway and Explorer Drive. Upon arrival, officers found that one of the drivers, 69-year-old David R. Hundley of Colorado Springs, had died as a result of the injuries he sustained in this crash. Due to the nature of the incident, the CSPD’s Major Crash Team responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation. The Colorado Springs Fire Department also responded to the scene.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Hundley was attempting an unprotected left turn from westbound Briargate Parkway on to southbound Explorer Drive in his Honda hatchback when he was struck by an eastbound Infinity sedan. Mr. Hundley was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. Impairment is not suspected in this crash and the investigation is continuing. 

This is the 11th traffic-related fatality in Colorado Springs in 2020. At this time last year, there were 17 traffic fatalities in Colorado Springs.
