On Monday, September 19, 2022, the El Paso County Coroner’s Office completed the autopsy of the decedent, who has been identified as 22- year-old Gene Carnes of Colorado Springs.  While the Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death, Mr. Carnes’ death is being investigated as a homicide.

Mr. Carnes’s death is the 33rd homicide investigation in the City of Colorado Springs in 2022.  CSPD investigated 25 homicides this time last year.

The identity of the person identified as the shooter is not being released at this time. Charges are pending the District Attorney’s review of the case. This is still an active investigation and further information will be released through the Public Information Office (PIO) as appropriate. On Friday, September 16, 2022, at 11:59 a.m. the Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) Communications Center received multiple calls regarding a shooting on the Bijou St. bridge over I-25. Upon arrival officers located a deceased adult male. Multiple witnesses were contacted, and they provided varying descriptions of the suspect, so no definitive suspect information is available. The suspect was last seen walking north along the west side of the sound barrier adjacent to I-25. The CSPD Homicide/Assault Unit responded and assumed responsibility for the investigation.
On September 17, 2022, detectives were able to identify an adult male suspect in this investigation. The adult male was interviewed prior to being released pending additional follow-up investigation. There is no known danger to the community because of this shooting and all parties are now accounted for. Further updates will be provided by the CSPD PIO when appropriate.
